1. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping; special envoy, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for advancement of girls’ and women’s education (partially overlaid with shots 2-18):
“Director General Khaled El-Enany, ladies and gentlemen, friends, greetings to you all!
As the International Day of the Girl Child approaches, it is truly meaningful that UNESCO is bringing us together for the award ceremony of the 2026 UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. Let me extend warm congratulations to this event and to this year’s laureates. Girls and women’s education is a key measure of the progress of human civilization. In recent years, thanks to UNESCO’s strong advocacy and the international community’s concerted efforts, we have achieved encouraging progress in this worthy cause.
Winning this year’s prize are two projects: ‘Soar in a Bag’ from Morocco, which develops courses to support the healthy growth of adolescent girls, and ‘Girls with Opportunities’ from Peru, which combines skills learning with academic and career development to enhance the effectiveness of education. They are both commendable initiatives, representing and demonstrating worldwide efforts to promote girls’ and women’s education.
China has always set great store by girls’ and women’s education, and is committed to helping women in China to receive better education and live a life of purpose. At the same time, we are also actively and extensively carrying out practical cooperation with UNESCO and relevant parties, and have implemented a number of programs, benefiting women across the globe. China’s efforts over recent years in using AI to empower quality education have not only boosted gender equality in education and women’s all-round development, but also provided useful experience for fellow Global South countries. However, girls’ and women’s education remains an arduous task. It requires our continued and consistent efforts. Especially in today’s world where digital and intelligent technologies are developing at a faster pace, people need to master many new skills in their work and life.
As the UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education, I call on the international community to work together to enhance women’s vocational education and training, and vigorously develop digital and intelligent education for women, to ensure that they can use and benefit from digital and intelligent technologies. Together, let’s build them a ladder to a life of brilliance.
Ladies and gentlemen, friends, every woman who turns to education for knowledge and skills deserves to be seen, supported and protected. In advancing girls’ and women’s education, hope is sown, dreams are nurtured, and happiness will be reaped in abundance.
As the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education enters a new decade, I stand ready to work with all of you to promote greater progress in girls’ and women’s education, and contribute to a brighter future in which more women can thrive and shine.
Thank you.”
