“This is a very important step taken by the military this time to show the capability and determination to defeat any provocation from the United States and from the separatists in Taiwan. So I think the six areas are very close to the island and of course this is a deterrent action at this moment. I’m sure in the future, if it’s necessary, I’m sure the real engagement by the military will give the important pressure on the separatist in Taiwan and some other countries in this region. Of course, this is a very crucial moment for any country, for any side to think about the dangerous game played by the United States or by the separatist at this moment.”

“I’m sure this should be a continuous operation by Chinese military in the future. For example, the rocket firing exercise and also the fighters and battleship patrolling close to Taiwan. So I think the military should be the last resort at this moment. But I’m sure the military pressure will be there as a deterrent action against the separatist or any countries would like to be involved in the Taiwan issue. So I’m sure the military in the future will play a key role.”

“To some extent, this is a confrontation between Chinese military and the U.S. military. Actually, I’m sure the two military would like to sit down to find some peaceful solutions of such a security dilemma. Because any clash between the two military will be a disaster for the two countries and also for the regional countries because the two countries all have nuclear weapons and also the large scale weapon systems in the two military. So I think the two military should be very careful and not for the sake of some specific politicians like the Speaker Pelosi or the separatists in Taiwan. So the military should be very cautious. At this moment, I’m sure the management for crisis or some differences for the two military should be put on top agenda to avoid any direct clash between the two militaries.”

Storyline
A series of joint military exercises conducted by the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) around Taiwan Island show China’s capability and determination to defend its sovereignty, Teng Jianqun, a researcher at the China Institute of International Studies, said in an interview on Thursday.
The joint military operations, which started on Tuesday, should act as a stern deterrent against provocative acts by the United States or separatist activities seeking “Taiwan independence”, he said.
Of course, this is a very crucial moment for any country, for any side to think about the dangerous game played by the United States or by the separatist at this moment,” said Teng.
He said that the Chinese military would likely carry out such operations regularly around the Taiwan region in the future, as a warning against provocations from the U.S. and separatist forces in the island.
So I’m sure the military in the future will play a key role,” said Teng.
Teng said reports of stepped up U.S. military activity in the region made it more important for China and the U.S. to find peaceful solutions to ease rising tensions and avoid unwanted military confrontation.
