Storyline

China urged the United States to foster positive people-to-people exchanges and cooperation to enhance public support for the stable development of China-U.S. relations, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Thursday.

Zhao Lijian, the spokesman, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing as the U.S. National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) “warned” state and local officials that China was trying to “manipulate” them to pressure Washington.

“There is an old saying in China about a man who remains suspicious of his neighbor for stealing his axe which was in fact lost by himself. The relevant remarks of the U.S. side are full of Cold War zero-sum mindset and ideological prejudice. Dialogues and cooperation between relevant Chinese institutions and the U.S. side is upright and aboveboard, and has played an important role in deepening people-to-people and cultural exchanges and mutual learning between the two countries while enhancing mutual understanding and mutual trust, and has been widely welcomed and actively supported by the two peoples,” said Zhao.

Zhao also emphasized that the U.S. side should work with China in a constrictive way to foster positive regional cooperation and people-to-people exchanges to maintain stable development of China-U.S. relations.
