Storyline
A humanitarian assistance center has been established in the Afghan Province of Khost, the epicenter of 5.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted many parts of the country on June 20, to receive and distribute international donations to those in need.
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan Wednesday is the deadliest in more than 20 years, causing at least 1,500 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries while destroying more than 3,000 houses.
According to the Taliban-led interim government, the center was built mainly to receive relief supplies donated by the international community before they are transferred to provinces of Paktika and Khost which were worst hit.
“We have dispatched three to four trucks heading to Barmal district of Paktika to deliver the relief goods. So far, the relief operation has been progressing smoothly. It’s our duty to help all those affected by the quake,” said Homayun, a team leader working at the assistance center.
Tents, food, and medicine are in the most demand for the earthquake-affected families. Supplies donated by institutions from the United Nations, countries including Pakistan and United Arab Emirates are already in place to those those in need.
The Chinese government has provided Afghanistan with 50 million yuan (around 7.5 million U.S. dollars) worth of emergency relief supplies, with the first two batches including tents, blankets and folding beds having already arrived in Kabul on Monday and Tuesday respectively.
“Many countries, such as Pakistan, China and Iran have provided us with aid, including most wanted necessities such as food and medicines,” said Khost resident Kala Khan Faruqi.
