“As of 24:00 on August 7, a total of 274 positive cases have been reported in this region (excluding the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps), all of which are asymptomatic, affecting 12 counties and districts in seven prefectures and cities, including Yili, Tacheng, Kashgar, Bozhou, Aksu, Hami and Urumqi.”

The current round of COVID-19 infections in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was triggered by an imported source of the Omicron BA5.2 subvariant, said a local health official at a press conference on Monday.
Cui Yan, director of the regional center of epidemic prevention and disease control gave an update on the outbreak at the briefing.
“Based on the results of genetic sequencing comparison of viruses in this round of outbreak by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus triggering the resurgence belonged to an Omicron BA5.2 subvariant, different from sources of the previous Omicron variants in the domestic coronavirus genetic sequence database.
