Storyline
A Chinese envoy on Tuesday called on the international society to take practical and effective steps in ending the conflicts between Palestine and Israel and promote a two-state solution so as to return peace and justice to the Palestinian people at an early date.
Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations and rotating president of the UN Security Council for August, made the remarks on Monday at an emergency meeting on the situation in the Middle East.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland told the meeting that since Friday, Israeli Defense Forces launched 147 air strikes against targets in Gaza while Palestinian militants unleashed 1,100 rockets and mortars into Israel.
A total of 46 Palestinians were killed and 360 others injured during the conflict, and 70 Israelis were injured as the result, said Wennesland.
Zhang said the root cause leading to the frequent turmoil between Palestine and Israel is derailment of the peace process in the Middle East, the foundation of the “two-state solution” has been continuously eroded, UN resolutions were not effectively implemented, and the Palestine’s right to independent statehood has been repeatedly violated.
He pointed out that a comprehensive and fair solution cannot be replaced by occasional management of crisis, debts of political security cannot be wiped out by limited economic humanitarian measures, and long-term international consensus and multilateral process cannot be replaced by policies of some certain countries.
He called on the Security Council to listen to the call of Palestinian people and take effective actions to return hope and justice to the Palestinian people.
“The international community must take a long-term view, face with the root cause directly and carry out diplomatic actions with a sense of emergency, to change the negative situation on the ground and restart the peace process at an early date. Substantive steps should be adopted to realize a two-state solution, to make sure Palestinian people enjoy full right, and to realize a comprehensive, fair and lasting solution to the Palestine issue as soon as possible,” said Zhang.
