Storyline

The Palestinian Islamist Jihad(PIJ) agreed on an Egyptian-proposed humanitarian ceasefire with Israel that took effect from 23:30 local time on Sunday.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced the truce in a brief statement released on its social media account, but pointed out that if the agreement is violated, Israel “maintains the right to respond strongly.”

Ziad al-Nakhalah, leader of the PIJ, the Gaza-based militant group, attended a press conference at Teheran, capital of Iran, on early Monday to announce the agreement, but also warned that the PIJ will continue fighting if Israel breaks the agreement.

According to al-Nakhalah, Israeli forces did not reach its target of striking the PIJ in a military operation that lasted for over 50 hours. The PIJ had created conditions for Israel to release the group’s two captured leaders.

The PIJ leader thanked Iran for its support and said western countries like the U.S. are PIJ’s enemies.

Latest data from Israeli military showed the PIJ had launched 935 rocket-assisted projectiles (RAP), of which 770 reached Israeli territory. Israel intercepted some 300 projectiles while the rest reached depopulated areas. Three were injured by debris of those projectiles.

Health department at Gaza Strip said the military operation initiated by Israel had killed 43 and injured 311.

The tension between Israel and the PIJ militants has been flaring for the third day since Friday afternoon.
