7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Su Bingtian, Chinese sprinter:
“In the Tokyo Olympics last year, the Chinese team won a medal as a substitute, which was really difficult. I myself have been watching the Chinese relay team grow and make breakthroughs step by step. But for this year, the Chinese team may have a new strategy. Because our focus is on the 2024 Paris Olympics, so this year the Chinese team will have some replacements of its members, and some new athletes will join the team, so that the entire relay team can go further.”

Storyline
China’s ace sprinter Su Bingtian said that considering his current competitive status, he is satisfied with his result in men’s 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon of the United States.
Su narrowly surged to the semifinals of men’s 100 meters after clocking in 10.15 seconds in the preliminary round on Friday local time.
It was Su’s debut for the 2022 athletics season after the 32-year-old went 10 months without participating in any competition. Su said in an interview that he was satisfied with the result considering the injuries and training status in the past period.
“In fact, considering my current training situation, I am quite satisfied with this result today. I think participating in this kind of competition will actually make me feel very cordial, like returning to my own home. I actually yearn for that kind of excitement about participating in this kind of competition,” said Su.
Speaking of the upcoming men’s four-by-100-meters relay at the World Athletics Championships, Su said the Chinese team has adopted a strategy leaning on young athletes this year, with an aim at achieving better results at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The first-ever Asian sprinter to break the 10-second barrier in the 100-meter track and field event, Su is the fastest Asian man with a personal best of 9.83 seconds.
He was the only Chinese to participate in the red hot men’s 100m event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
