Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s latest inspection of the Xiongan Railway Station in north China’s Hebei Province has fueled people’s confidence in the development of a fast and highly-efficient transportation network in the Xiongan New Area — a state-level new development area built to relieve the capital city Beijing of nonessential functions.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, arrived at the Xiongan Railway Station Wednesday morning during his inspection tour to the New Area.

During the inspection, Xi called for more efforts to be made in linking the Xiongan Railway Station with all parts of the Xiongan New Area so as to facilitate the traffic flow of people and logistics distribution.

“The general secretary urged us to further optimize and link the smaller routes connecting the Xiongan Railway Station and the New Area to increase the efficiency of handling passenger flow, logistics services, and rallying or evacuating crowds of people,” said Du Xiaojun, head of the Xiong’an Railway Station.

“The strategic decision made by the general secretary [on the construction of the Xiongan New Area] has delivered substantial benefits to the people and practically changed their way of life. It’s very convenient indeed,” said Hu Chunfeng, a passenger at Xiong’an Railway Station.

The Xiongan Railway Station is the first major infrastructure project in the Xiongan New Area. Its construction started on December 1, 2018, with the station becoming operational on December 27, 2020.

The construction area of the entire station covers 475,200 square meters. The location is a meeting point of the Beijing-Xiongan Intercity Railway, the Beijing-Hong Kong High-speed Railway, the Tianjin-Xiongan Intercity Railway, the Xiongan-Shijiazhuang Intercity Railway and the Xiongan-Xinzhou High-speed Railway. In the future, the station will become a new hub of China’s high-speed rail networks.

With the opening of the Beijing-Xiongan Intercity Railway, the layout of the railway network in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in north China has been further optimized.

By now, 14 pairs of intercity trains travel between Beijing and Xiongan on a daily basis. With the accelerated construction of the external backbone transportation network, the historic Chinese capital Beijing and the city of the future Xiongan are becoming more and more closely interconnected and integrated.

China announced plans to establish the Xiongan New Area on April 1, 2017, in order to relieve Beijing of functions nonessential to its core role as the national capital and advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

By 2035, Xiongan will have basically developed into a modern city that is green and intelligent, with relatively strong competitiveness and harmonious human-environment interaction.
