Storyline
The 14th Strait Forum took place in Xiamen City of east China’s Fujian Province on Wednesday to promote exchanges among people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and deepen integrated development.
Despite a complicated and severe situation in the Taiwan Strait and the ongoing pandemic, around 2,000 guests from the Taiwan region joined the offline activities upon invitation.
As the biggest and most influential interchange event for people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, this year’s forum also addressed hot economic issues and highlighted the outcomes of the economic integration across the Taiwan Strait.
The mainland has been actively guiding Taiwan compatriots to engage in the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan and integrate into the new development paradigm and enjoy the benefits from high-quality development together with mainland businesses, said Lin Tianliang, executive vice president of the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland.
“Whenever we faced some problems during the pandemic, governments at all levels on the mainland acted quickly and effectively solved them for us, which ensured our smooth resumption of work and production,” said the Taiwan businessman.
Taiwan compatriot Li Peizhen, chairwoman of the Straits Urban and Rural Development Foundation based in Haicang District of Xiamen, has devoted herself to grassroots-level work in Fujian with her team of more than 40 other Taiwan compatriots for nine years.
She shared her personal stories at the forum and said she will stay on the mainland and continue providing services for the villagers.
“What we are doing is very small, but working in the villages every day, we believe the small right things would come together to form a strong force. The inclusiveness for diversified work patterns indicates the mainland has a rich soil for them,” Li said.
During the event, young singers from both the mainland and Taiwan staged songs jointly composed by musicians from both sides of the Strait, showing the common historical and cultural vein that can never be severed and the resolutions of youths across the Strait to strive for a better future together.
“I always believe that the national affinity among the compatriots can resolve disputes and the estrangement. So, I think such things like the sound of music can help push people across the Strait toward the same direction,” said Li Shuren, a young Taiwan compatriot.
