Storyline

China will take all-out efforts to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in Sudan as the deadly clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue across the country, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

During an interview with China Media Group (CMG), Wu Xi, director-general of the department of consular affairs said there’s over 1,500 Chinese residents in Sudan and the Chinese Embassy in Sudan will assist them with all possible means.

“The Foreign Ministry has been closely following the development of the situation, figuring out various working plans, maintaining close contact with Chinese people in Sudan, issuing consular alerts and maintaining intensive communication with relevant Sudanese parties. We are making every possible effort to protect the lives of over 1,500 Chinese people in Sudan,” Wu said.

“At present, ongoing gunfires in Khartoum and other places pose a greater threat of stray bullets while there is an increase in vandalism and looting cases. We advise Chinese citizens in Sudan, especially in Khartoum, to pay close attention to the security situation and the information issued by the Embassy in Sudan, stay calm and vigilant and take security precautions. If you have any needs, please contact the Embassy and we will do our best to assist you,” she said.

Sudan has been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in Khartoum and other areas since April 15, with the two sides accusing each other of initiating the conflict.

Until Friday, the clashes left over 400 people dead and about 3,500 others wounded, according to the Sudanese health ministry.

The Sudanese army on Saturday said it would help to secure the evacuation of foreign diplomats and nationals.
