Storyline

Tourism in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is gaining in popularity this summer as the region’s tourism sector has taken measures to provide better services for tourists amid effective epidemic containment.

Kanas, Nalati, Tianshan Tianchi and other scenic spots in Xinjiang are attracting more visitors than ever before.

“The Kanas scenic spot has its own beautiful scenery just as a desert has its own beauty. I will visit the scenic spot again if there is a chance in the future,” said Ma Junli, a tourist from east China’s Zhejiang Province.

With stringent anti-epidemic measures in place, tourist sites have been increasing the frequency of tour vehicles, extending their operating hours and recruiting volunteer guides to help tourists have a better experience.

Tianchi, or “Heavenly”, Lake in Fukang City boasts unique geology and landforms, and the Geological Museum there is proving to be a popular attraction for students.

“We have learned a lot at Tianchi Geological Museum, which has exhibits about wild and rare animals such as antelope and red deer. It is a rewarding visit for us as it has enriched our knowledge about Tianchi,” said Li Zhelin, a student from central China’s Hubei Province.

Homestays with rural families in the region are another attraction that is proving popular.

In Arshan Village, Xinyuan County, Yili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, 10 professional cooperatives have been set up to provided homestays, horse trekking and other activities which help improve livelihoods in these remote communities.

To further boost tourism this year, Xinjiang authorities have opened special tourist transport services buy air, rail and road, with Xinjiang Railway planning to start running 102 special tourist trains soon.

Regional tourism authorities have also stepped up their inspections of tourist facilities such as travel agencies, tour guides, hotels and other tourist venues to ensure standards are being maintained and the correct welcome is being extended to visitors.

From January to June this year, Xinjiang received more than 77 million tourists and took in tourism revenue of more than 53 billion yuan (about 7.88 billion U.S. dollars).

“Since the beginning of this year, Xinjiang’s tourism industry has seen rapid development. In particular, a number of new models have been formed, such as tourism camps and health care. In the next step, we will focus on developing various advantageous resources in Xinjiang to make Xinjiang’s tourism industry more attractive”, said Yan Naimin, Deputy Director of the Culture and Tourism Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
