Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon, with the two sides pledging to enhance practical cooperation in various fields and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.
Meeting with Hassanal on the sidelines of the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, Xi pointed out China and Brunei are good neighbors facing each other across the sea and good partners of mutual trust and mutual support.
Since they established diplomatic relations over 30 years ago, the two countries have continuously deepened political mutual trust, actively sought synergy between respective development strategies, and achieved fruitful results from practical cooperation in various fields, he said.
The Chinese president said the two countries have maintained good coordination on international and regional affairs, set an example of equality and win-win cooperation between countries of different sizes, and made positive contribution to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.
Noting this year marks the 5th anniversary of the establishment of China-Brunei strategic cooperative partnership, Xi said China stands ready to work with Brunei to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and make new progresses in bilateral relations, so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples.
Xi stressed China supports Brunei’s development path suited to its own national conditions, welcomes Brunei to expand its export of quality products to China, and encourages more Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in Brunei.
China seeks to expand practical cooperation in food security, digital economy, and green development with Brunei and carry out people-to-people exchanges in education, culture, tourism, and health, and at the sub-national level, he said.
Xi said both sides should work together to push for positive progress in joint maritime development and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea.
China attaches great importance to East Asian cooperation and is willing to work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries including Brunei to promote regional economic integration and make sure that East Asian cooperation will move forward in the right direction, he said.
Hassanal congratulated China on the successful hosting of the 19th Asian Games. He said Brunei and China have longstanding friendship and sound development in relations with exchanges and cooperation in various fields progressing smoothly. He reiterated Brunei’s commitment to upholding the one-China policy.
Brunei attaches great importance to developing relations with China, and is willing to strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, agriculture, fishery, and green energy, deepen people-to-people exchanges, and actively promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with China, he said.
The Sultan said his country is willing to continue to enhance cooperation with China within the ASEAN framework, looks forward to an early conclusion of the Code of Conduct (COC) in the South China Sea, so as to make joint efforts to build the South China Sea into a sea of peace and friendship and promote regional peace and security.
He also said Brunei will stay in close contact with China on regional issues such as the Palestine-Israel conflict.
