Storyline
Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech on the final day of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in San Francisco on Friday, stressing the importance of prioritizing common development across the Asia-Pacific region.
Noting that APEC has always been at the forefront of global openness since its regular leaders’ meeting mechanism was first established, Xi pointed out that it has vigorously promoted regional trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, creating a world-renowned “Asia-Pacific miracle”.
Xi said that as changes unseen in a century rapidly unfold, the world economy is facing a variety of risks and challenges, and stressed that Asia-Pacific bears ever greater responsibilities to act as an engine for global growth.
He urged all parties to actively join hands to take on global challenges and strive for full implementation of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040.
The Chinese president also put forward several proposals in the speech.
First, Xi called for continuing innovation-driven development and accelerating the digital transformation. Efforts should be made to promote exchanges and cooperation on science and technology in a more active manner, and foster an open, fair, equitable and non-discriminatory environment.
Second, Xi called for all parties to stay committed to the path to opening-up, highlighting the need to safeguard free, open trade and investment, and oppose politicizing, weaponizing economic and trade issues and overstretching the concept of national security in this regard.
Third, the Chinese president urged sticking to green development, calling for efforts to ensure harmonious co-existence between man and nature in the face of climate change and other growing challenges.
Fourth, Xi also stressed that all parties should adhere to inclusive sharing. “We must fully implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and push development issues back to the center of the international agenda,” said Xi.
Xi welcomed all parties to actively participate in the Global Development Initiative.
Xi said China sticks to the path of peaceful development, remains committed to high-quality development and high-level opening-up, and said Chinese-style modernization could offer opportunities for all countries in promoting their own modernization.
Xi called on APEC economies to work together in promoting Asia-Pacific cooperation to achieve more fruitful results and forge another golden 30 years for the region.
