Nearly 3,000 deputies exercised their constitutional right to elect China’s state leadership on Friday at the ongoing session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s national legislature.
Xi Jinping was unanimously elected president of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission (CMC) by a total of 2,952 deputies at the third plenary meeting of the first session of the 14th NPC.
In October last year, Xi was elected general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and was also named CMC chairman of the CPC at the first plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee.
He was first elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee in late 2012, and Chinese president and CMC chairman of the PRC in March 2013.
“General Secretary Xi Jinping was unanimously elected Chinese president this morning. Every deputy cast a solemn and sacred vote. We were extremely excited and honored,” said Li Hongyao, a deputy from Jiangsu Province.
“General Secretary Xi Jinping was unanimously elected Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, reflecting the common will of the Party, the people, and the military, and the common aspiration of all the Chinese people. This election fully demonstrated the whole-process people’s democracy and also the advantages and characteristics of the socialist system,” said Yin Shuangfeng, a deputy from Hunan Province.
Xi, 69, made a public pledge of allegiance to the Constitution shortly after being elected.
“The solemn and sacred oath to the Constitution fully reflects the Constitution-based governance and exercise of state power. General Secretary Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders took an oath to the Constitution also set an example for the state staff,” said Hu Zhonghui, a deputy from Henan Province.
“Sonorous as it is, every sentence of the oath is a solemn commitment to the people. The oath to the Constitution reflects the solemnity of the Constitution, the respect of the head of state for the Constitution and for the people,” said Sun Bin, a deputy from Heilongjiang Province.
The 2,977 deputies to the 14th NPC were elected from 35 electoral units across the country, and they are broadly representative.
“I’m a Party branch secretary at the grassroots level. Under the leadership of General Secretary Xi, great changes have taken place in our village in terms of infrastructure, supply of water, electricity and gas, transportation and communications. The people’s happiness index is getting higher and higher,” said Yu Shaorong, a deputy of the Qiang ethnic group from Sichuan Province.

The first session of the 14th NPC opened on March 5 and is scheduled to conclude on March 13.
