Storyline
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday stressed enhancing integrated national strategic system and capabilities to build a strong military.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, attended a plenary meeting of the delegation of the People’s Liberation Army and People’s Armed Police Force during the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC).
He stressed the imperative to uphold the centralized and unified leadership of the Party Central Committee, strengthen integrated strategic layout, strategic resources and strategic forces, so as to systematically enhance the country’s strengths in coping with strategic risks, safeguarding strategic interests and achieving strategic goals.
Xi called for greater scientific and technological innovation, encouraging the armed forces to maximize the use of national laboratories for that purpose, to achieve greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology.
He said the military should improve its strategic capacity in emerging fields to seek new advantages in the country’s national development and international competition.
He urged efforts to strengthen major infrastructure projects, and fortify national reserves to safeguard national security.
Xi called on the military to deepen reforms and take a problem-oriented approach to improve the systems and mechanisms, and refine policies and institutions.
He said it is important to uphold the armed forces’ tradition of promoting mutual support between civilian sectors and the military.
