Storyline

The Chinese mainland on Monday reported 350 new locally-transmitted confirmed COVID-19 cases and 49 imported ones, according to the National Health Commission’s report on Tuesday.

Among the local cases, 300 were reported in Hainan, 25 in Guangdong, 16 in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, two each in Jilin, Fujian, and Chongqing Municipality, one each in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Sichuan and Tibet Autonomous Region.

On Monday, 108 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery, including 47 local cases, and 9,711 close contacts were released from medical observation. The number of local severe cases increased by one from the previous day.

The Chinese mainland has cumulatively reported 21,177 imported confirmed cases, with no deaths. Among them, 20,581 had been discharged from hospital following recovery while 596 remained hospitalized, with two in severe conditions.

As of 24:00 on Aug 8, the number of local confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland had reached 231,665, including 2,561 patients still receiving treatment, of whom three are in severe condition.

A total of 223,878 COVID-19 patients had been discharged from hospital on the mainland, and 5,226 had died as a result of the virus.

On Monday, 540 new asymptomatic cases, with 62 from overseas and 478 locally transmitted, were reported.

The commission also said 5,122 asymptomatic cases, including 654 imported ones, were still under medical observation.

Fifty-two asymptomatic cases, six from overseas, were re-categorized as active ones, and 433 asymptomatic cases, 56 from overseas, were released from medical observation on Monday.

As of Monday, 361,433 confirmed cases including 9,547 deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), together with 791 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR with six deaths, and 4,754,268 cases including 9,255 deaths in the Taiwan region of China.
