Storyline
International experts have strongly rebuked U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan this week, saying that the move is provocative and violates the international law.
Fabio Massimo Parenti, a scholar of international relations at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute, said Pelosi’s visit is a provocation to China and the United States should honor its commitment to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques.
“Pelosi’s visit may cause serious consequences and is totally a provocation to China. It is a consensus of the international community that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. In the three China-U.S. joint communiques, the United States also recognizes the one-China principle,” said Parenti.
Parenti said the United States never cares about the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries, instead it just holds double standard and acts for its own interests.
“The only way in which this kind of stuff can make any sense is this idea that the U.S. is the empire that has the right to get its hands involved in politics all around the world. And so I think it is a totally damaging thing, she should back out of it. She shouldn’t go forward with it,” said Yves Engler, a fellow at the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.
Noting that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, some others think Pelosi’s visit will undermine stability across the Taiwan Strait.
“What the American visit means now is to put China into difficult position, somehow to control the area. It is a violation of international law,” said Huseyin Bagci, head of the Turkish Foreign Policy Institute.
“The whole world has come to accept that China is to be dealt with on the basis of one-China policy. It is unfortunate that the United States chooses to fan the flames of conflict over Taiwan,” said Fredrick Mutesa, secretary general of the Zambia-China Friendship Association.
Peter Kagwanja, president of the Africa Policy Institute, said Pelosi will gain nothing from her irresponsible action but be regarded as a provocateur by history.
“I think it was very irresponsible for the Speaker to make that trip to China’s Taiwan region. I would not say that the Speaker of the American congress has gained anything. She’ll go down in history as a provocateur,” said Kagwanja.
