I don’t think many Americans, including those in the White House, understand the history or significance of the one-China principle, which is basis for the U.S.-China normalization.”

Storyline

Scholars and officials from across the world have expressed their firm support for the one-China principle and their opposition to Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s visit this week to China’s Taiwan region.

Fabio Massimo Parenti, a scholar of international relations with the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute, said that Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was a provocation to China and ignored fundamental principles widely-held in the international community.

“Pelosi’s visit may cause serious consequences and is totally a provocation to China. It is a consensus of the international community that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. In the three joint China-U.S. communiques, the United States also recognizes the one-China principle,” said Parenti.

Chas W. Freeman, Jr., former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, said Pelosi’s irresponsible visit to Taiwan was purely to serve her own political agenda. He said that understanding the significance of the one-China principle was the basis for the normalization of China-U.S. relations.

“She has been consistent and using China as a political pawn for her career. She is 82 years old. This may be the last important trip that she takes abroad. So I think it’s very much her personal political agenda and style, and I consider it completely irresponsible. I don’t think many Americans, including those in the White House, understand the history or significance of the one-China principle, which is basis for the U.S.-China normalization,” said the senior diplomat.

Carlos Alzugaray, a veteran diplomat and scholar of international affairs said that the U.S. should seek cooperation and coordination and pursue peace and friendship.

“Obviously, this visit runs counter to the decision of the world. The UN resolution recognizes that there is only one China in the world. Taiwan is part of China’s territory, and the Taiwan question is China’s internal affairs. The United States must recognize that for any issue, the path to be taken should be the path of cooperation, coordination and the pursuit of peace and friendship,” said Alzugaray.

Ali al-Hefny, Egypt’s former Ambassador to China and former Deputy Foreign Minister said that these unilateral actions from the U.S. will exacerbate the tension in China-U.S. relations.

“As a global power and a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations (UN), the United States should abide by international norms on regional security issues, while it has repeatedly provoked other countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia, especially on the Taiwan question. The unilateral actions of the U.S. will only exacerbate the tension between China and the United States itself, and worsen regional tensions,” said Ali al-Hefny.

Jorge Elbaum, a professor of University of Buenos Aires, said that the U.S. is meddling in China’s internal affairs, while calling Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan an outrageous act.

“The U.S. is habitually meddling in the internal affairs of Latin American countries in a systematic way. And now it is doing the same with China as it faces the challenges posed by China’s emergence as an economic and trading power. It is interfering in China’s internal affairs with regard to Taiwan, an inseparable part of China’s territory. U.S. House Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is an outrageous act,” said Elbaum.
