Storyline

The Chinese mainland reported 53 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and 58 new imported ones on Wednesday, said the National Health Commission in its daily report on Thursday.

Of the new local cases, 24 were reported in Hainan, 10 in Inner Mongolia, nine in Zhejiang, two each in Fujian, Shandong, Henan and Guangxi, and one each in Chongqing and Sichuan.

The 58 new imported cases were reported in 11 provincial-level regions, including 29 in Guangdong, eight each in Shanghai and Fujian, three in Heilongjiang, two each in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Chongqing, and one each in Beijing, Jiangsu, Shandong and Yunnan.

Six of the local cases and five of the imported cases were re-categorized as confirmed cases from asymptomatic ones.

No new deaths from COVID-19 or additional suspected cases were reported on the day.

On Wednesday, 130 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery, including 90 local cases and 40 imported ones, and 27,872 close contacts were released from medical observation. The number of local severe cases increased by one from the previous day.

The Chinese mainland cumulatively reported 20,908 imported confirmed cases as of Wednesday, with no deaths. Among them, 20,320 were discharged from hospital following recovery.

There were still 588 active imported cases on the mainland, with one severe case and no suspected cases, on Wednesday.

As of 24:00 on Wednesday, the total number of local confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland reached 229,913, with 5,226 deaths as a result of the virus.

A total of 223,139 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospital on the mainland. There were 1,548 patients still receiving treatment, of whom one was in severe condition.

As of Wednesday, altogether 4,688,014 close contacts have been traced, of whom 106,601 were still under medical observation.

On Wednesday, 335 new asymptomatic cases, with 94 from overseas and 241 locally transmitted, were reported on the mainland.

The commission also said 5,903 asymptomatic cases, including 635 imported ones, were still under medical observation.

Eleven asymptomatic cases, including five from overseas, were re-categorized as confirmed ones, and 640 asymptomatic cases, including 58 from overseas, were released from medical observation on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, 357,909 confirmed cases, including 9,524 deaths, were reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), while 791 confirmed cases with six deaths were registered in the Macao SAR, and 4,652,186 cases including 9,026 deaths, in the Taiwan region of China.
