Local residents of China’s capital city Beijing expressed their concern over the damaging repercussions of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region.
On Tuesday, in disregard of the Chinese side’s firm opposition, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China’s Taiwan region.
“I do not think that the trip will lead to a confrontation between the two countries, but there could be repercussions in the economic and bilateral ties between the U.S. and China,” said a Beijing resident.
“The U.S. seems hell-bent on creating a war-like atmosphere in its dealings with China, but China has faced similar situations before and is good at handling such issues in an appropriate manner,” said another resident.
One resident said that Pelosi’s trip ignores not just China’s government, but also America’s.
“The U.S. government is working in a fragmented manner, with their politicians pursuing their own agendas. For selfish reasons, they are ignoring international precedents and norms. Pelosi’s visit will put China-U.S. ties in a precarious position,” he said.
“Opposition to Pelosi’s proposed trip has been widespread, including from several people in Taiwan,” said another resident.
