Storyline
Farmers across China have gained abundant benefits and returns by planting cash crops in the process of achieving rural revitalization with the help of digitalization, mechanization and customized livestreaming sales.
Manasi County of Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous is now embracing a bumper harvest of tomatoes as harvesters are bustling back and forth in the fields dangling with red and maroon fruits.
Manasi County government has continuously optimized the planting structure, encouraged and guided local farmers to plant high-efficiency cash crops, which has greatly increased incomes for the locals.
“With a growth trend like this, we can now plant 10 tons for 666.7 square meters of land. We can sell [tomatoes] at 50 cents per kilogram, which means that 666.7 square meters [of tomatoes can be sold at] 5,000 yuan (741.4 U.S. dollars). It can be said that our income this year is relatively good,” said Chen Wanhu, a local from Wangjiazhuang Village of the county.
To further raise the efficiency of the harvest, local authorities have deployed harvesters and trucks to secure the swift transportation of the tomatoes. The 1,000 hectares of tomatoes are expected to be harvested by machines by the end of September.
Local farmers in Ji’an City in east China’s Jiangxi Province and Nanyang City in central China’s Henan Province are also gaining a bumper harvest of grapes and crown pears respectively. Those fruits, with the help from modern technology, have injected new energy into the rural revitalization.
As one of the poverty alleviation industries in Ji’an County, grapes in Hengjiang Town has helped 14,453 local households with nearly 50,000 people out of poverty.
This year, local government has established a technology service center to attract talents to develop the local grape industry.
“[We have] set up a new technical team and introduced new varieties. For example, the variety named sunshine rose is a kind of grape that produce standard fruits and basically each cluster of grapes is about 60 fruits – which is the best quality of the variety,” said Wang Huihua, chairman of Industry Association of Hengjiang Grape Farmers Professional Cooperative in Ji’an County.
At present, the plantation area of grapes in Hengjiang Town, Ji’an County has reached to 3,866.7 hectares, with an output value of 400 million yuan (59.3 million U.S. dollars), which directly helped more than 3,900 growers increase their incomes.
Farmers are seen busily picking crown pears in Tongbai County, Nanyang City of Henan. Green cards printed with code are hanging on trees as people can get access to information of the individual tree such as growing progress, watering and fertilization records by scanning the code.
By adopting new technologies in crown pear industry, establishing planting base and seedling base, local farmers’ income has been greatly boosted.
