Storyline
Members of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) are making enthusiastic prevalence in the second China International Consumer Products Expo afoot in Hainan in ardent anticipation of lucrative business opportunities.
The expo, kicked off Monday in Haikou City of south China’s Hainan Province, attracted a vast arry of RCEP members including Japan, South Korea and Malaysia.
As the RCEP came into force on January 1 this year, the exhibition areas of member countries increased by 20 percent from the first expo last year to more than 5,000 square meters
A total of 31 Japanese companies have set up booths at the enlarged Japan Pavilion this year. Visitors can gain immersive experience and taste of various Japanese goods, foods and liquors at the pavilion.
“Japanese sake is [popular] in China as the exports of Japanese sake to China is increasing. Japan attaches great importance to the RCEP agreement,” said Taka Akiba, a staff member at the Guangzhou office of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
Many companies from RCEP countries said they have yielded abundant benefits and returns from the world’s largest free trade agreement.
“We can enjoy lower tariffs, so our products have price advantages,” said an exhibitor from Japan.
As China is building Hainan into a globally influential and high-level free trade port by the middle of the century, many Thai companies are considering starting business in the island to better explore Chinese market.
“Companies from Thailand participating in the expo are not only for promoting the high-quality Thai brands, but to enhance cooperation with RCEP countries and especially China. We have huge confidence in the cooperation perspective bring by both the RCEP and the development of Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP),” said Oranuch Wannapinyo, a commercial consul of the Royal Thai Consulate General in Guangzhou.
With more global brands seizing the opportunity to have a share in China’s domestic market, Hong Kong companies are also using the free trade agreement and Hainan FTP to better engage in cooperation with the mainland and other RCEP countries.
“[RCEP] facilitates the flow of goods and capital for enterprises within the region with preferential tariffs and facilitation policies. The construction of Hainan Free Trade Port is already an important move for further opening up. This, together with the RCEP, provides a great opportunity for us,” said Jacky Chung Wing-hi, the chief representative of Hong Kong Trade Development Council on Chinese mainland.
