Storyline
Farmers in a major mango producing region in southern China are expecting a bountiful yield of the tropical fruit during the upcoming harvest season thanks to this year’s favorable weather conditions plus scientific management.
At a large mango orchard in Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, more than 30 kinds of the fruit are cultivated there, and workers are busying harvesting and sorting mangoes.
They say the output for the one orchard can top 1.5 million kilograms this year and that for the whole city will stand at one million tons, accounting for 25 percent of the national production. The value of the fresh fruit is also expected to exceed 5.5 billion yuan (roughly 816.71 million U.S. dollars).
Farmers explain the bumper harvest comes from the favorable weather coupled with advanced agricultural science.
The city is located in the Youjiang River valley basin, one of the three dominant subtropical regions and this year it has introduced a series of techniques.
Amongst, a delivery vehicle is specifically designed for transportation of mangoes or fertilizers. It can transport 200 to 250 kilograms of mangoes at a time and is able to clime steep slopes of 40 to 50 degrees, largely saving human power.
In addition, drones are also hired to spray fertilizer and water to ensure product quality. Within the same working hours, drones can be 10 to 12.5 times more efficient than humans.
At the end of 2021, Baise’s mango planting area amounted to nearly 90,667 hectares, with an output of 900,000 tons, which occupies about 30 percent of the country’s total output.
