Storyline
A Chinese city in the northern province of Hebei dedicated to guarantee happy old age life for the elderly in terms of health and wellness needs.
Facing the challenge of a growing aging demographic, China is focusing on developing services to meet the needs of the elderly.
Engaging in various activities such as choral singing, dancing lessons, painting and calligraphy, the retirees in the Xishan Community in the coastal city of Qinhuangdao, north China’s Hebei Province said they’re living a full life, thanks to this well-equipped community center that serves their health and wellness needs.
“When you are living and working in peace and contentment, you feel different both psychologically and spiritually,” said Meng Xianghui, a resident of Xishan Community.
The Xishan Community has a population of 23,000, with nearly a quarter of the residents aged over 65. The service center provides support for cultural and sport activities, and more importantly, assists them with their health care.
The local governments provide subsidies for those in need of rehabilitation or mobility devices. The Xishan Community has introduced a third-party company and set up a pilot program for the access to rehabilitation equipment.
“The governments at different levels supported us a lot. The municipal government subsidized 60 percent, and the district government subsidized 20 percent, so the residents only need to spend 20 percent of the market price to bring the rehabilitation equipment home. The subsidy is quite beneficial for them, which has been well received by the elderly residents in our community,” said Zhao Jingsi, Party secretary of the Xishan Community.
Psychological counseling is also available to residents in Xishan Community.
“For employees, we relieve their work pressure and help them put their mind at ease, and improve their work efficiency and protect their mental health. For the elderly, we provide targeted psychological assessment and support for empty nesters and those who lost their spouse and the disabled,” said Chen Yanfang, psychological counselor of Xishan Community.
Elderly residents who are homebound get their needs met as well.
“We organize service agencies to provide door-to-door assistance with bathing, dining, and travel services for elderly people. Now communities are like home to many elderly people,” said Liu Chunmei, secretary of the Work Committee of Xishan sub-district.
Xishan is located in Beidaihe District, which is a popular retirement resort in China. Many sanatoriums in Beidaihe date back to the middle of the last century.
A nursing home for coal miners there provides various rehabilitation services including lung lavage operation. For over 50 years, more than 300,000 coal miners were treated and recovered there.
“We follow the concept of serving people’s health in a full cycle, including disease prevention, diagnosis, control, treatment and rehabilitation, which is a full cycle rehabilitation service. We have neurological, bone and joint, cardiopulmonary and respiratory rehabilitation services,” said Chen Gang, deputy director of Beidaihe Convalescent Hospital.
Health care institutions have focused on improving traditional Chinese medicine to prevent the onset of disease.
“Disease prevention requires the use of traditional Chinese medicine to treat diseases before they occur, so that patients do not develop the disease, or reduce the incidence. In addition, we intervene as soon as we can in the rehabilitation to reduce disability and improve life quality,” said Chen.
The health and wellness service for the elderly there is a preview of China’s efforts to develop the life sciences and health industries in Qinhuangdao. Measures to promote trade, biomedicine, and the digital economy are in place to complement the city’s reputation for being a wellness and tourism hub.
