“Compared with ordinary civilian ships, the cruise ship’s main generators have made a great breakthrough in both the quantity and power, which are designed to meet the needs of all future users in the leisure areas of the 16-deck ship as well as the electricity demand for the ship navigation. It can be said that for an ordinary civilian ship, the goal is merely to supply power for a ship, while for the cruise ship, its power system is designed to drive a moving city on the sea.”

Storyline
China’s first domestically built large cruise ship recently started up its first main generator, moving the project into the equipment commissioning stage.
The main generators are the core equipment of the cruise ship, equivalent to its “heart”, serving as the main power source for the ship’s power distribution system and propulsion system.
Made by the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co, Ltd, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, the first home-built large cruise ship is equipped with five high-power generators, with the entire power system reaching up to 62.4 megawatts, equivalent to the amount of power distributed to a residential compound with 6,000 households.
“Compared with ordinary civilian ships, the cruise ship’s main generators have made a great breakthrough in both the quantity and power, which are designed to meet the needs of all future users in the leisure areas of the 16-deck ship as well as the electricity demand for the ship navigation. It can be said that for an ordinary civilian ship, the goal is merely to supply power for a ship, while for the cruise ship, its power system is designed to drive a moving city on the sea,” said Guo Yong, design director of the large cruise ship project under Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
In the next stage, the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. will gradually start up the other four generators and carry out load tests, and ensure the coordinated operation of the five generator in order to facilitate the progress of the cruise ship construction in an orderly manner.
The vista-class cruise ship will be 323.6 meters long and 37.2 meters wide and will be able to accommodate over 5,000 passengers.
